Proudly located in the Historic Walker Lake business district in St. Louis Park.

Our Community

Our restaurant wouldn’t exist without the support of our neighbors and our community. We’ve had help along the way from folks like our landlord, city staff, council members, and countless others who provided advice and support. We’re grateful for our employees who show up each day and treat every meal and every customer with the utmost care and respect. We love our neighborhood, anchored by St. Louis Park High School, down the street from our community food shelf, artist studios, and so many great small businesses and organizations that make up the Historic Walker Lake business district.

Faced with a Pandemic

Less than a year after we opened, we were blindsided by COVID-19. Our lunch sales dropped due to school and business closings and things were looking tough. But our community came out to support and rescue México City Café—without all of you, we couldn’t pull through this. We’ve added online ordering, curbside pickup, changed and tweaked our menu, hours, and operations, and we are surviving. We continue to operate México City Café. One of the many things Julio learned from growing up in Mexico City is survival and perseverance. Our little restaurant is still surviving and grateful to serve you!

History of the area

Our restaurant is located on Lake St., where in 1891, T.B. Walker (of Walker Art Center fame) built a streetcar to transport people from the earliest developments of the Village of St. Louis Park to Downtown Minneapolis. Though Walker and his business partners’ urban development efforts didn’t pan out the way they planned, their efforts are still felt today in what is now called Historic Walker Lake. In this 1954 photograph, courtesy of the St. Louis Park Historical Society, you can see where México City Café is now located in the upper lefthand corner. We are located in the same space where a community icon, Palm’s Bakery, served fresh bakery items for 50 years.

The iconic Palm’s Bakery operated from our current space for 50 years!
